  1. I’m as complex, curious, and human as you are

Did you know that I’m writing a horror novel about an ancient entity that survives by stealing the youth off young women who marry them for money? Or that I have four different books on my bedside table about economic theory right now? Or that I spent most of last night researching the religious reformations of 17th Century Prussia? That I daydream about what policies I’d introduce to limit drug addiction in the UK? That I love designing bridges? That I’d love to fundraise an archaeological dig on Noto Antica? Not because I’m not like other girls: I’m exactly like other girls. Other girls do interesting, strange, intelligent, creative and odd things. Other girls are as smart, broken, wonderful and capable as I am. We’re not pretty dolls sitting there blank eyed in front of astonishing, complex, superior, human men.

2. That I feel the same emotions and temptations that you do

I have sat on the floor of my kitchen and cried until I wanted to scream with grief over a man leaving me. I have been so delirious with sadness that I’ve walked in circles around New York until I knew I’d be too tired to stay awake that night. I’ve been so angry I’ve woken up…
