Can A Golem Cry

Short story

Once under the stars in the dark lay a Golem, who was born with a heart and a body of stone. And a girl loved the Golem, in the dark and the moonlight, although he said nothing, and grew forever cold.

“Can you love,” asked the girl, wrapping limbs to his shoulders. “Can you love, if your heart is cold unbeating clay?” And the Golem said nothing, for life had made him so, and such warm words moved not in that cold mouth and mind. And the girl held him tight in the wet of that night, for maybe her love would spark fire inside. But no love came, in the dark and the bloom of that unkind moon, and the Golem offered nothing to the woman who loved him.

“Can you feel,” asked the girl, as she wept on his face, so the warmth of her tears ran down to his chest. “Can you feel, if your mind is cold unfeeling clay?” And the Golem said nothing, for life had made him so, and such pain moved not in that cold mouth and mind. But the girl held him tight and spat out devotion, for maybe her love would spark fire inside. But no care came, in the dark and the bloom of that unkind moon, and the Golem offered nothing to the woman who loved him.

“Can you cry,” asked the woman, cradling his coldness, “can you cry, if your soul is cold unbending clay?” And the Golem said nothing, for life had made him so, and such sadness moved not in that cold…
