I was having supper with a male friend last week and he suddenly looked up at me with what I can only describe at sheer terror in his eyes. “What?” I said, bemused. “Well,” he said, swallowing. “It just occurred to me that maybe all women are as manipulative and cunning as you are.”

Before you panic, it’s okay. I hadn’t killed anyone. I was talking about how he could persuade his narcissistic boss to give him a raise. Nothing extraordinary or particularly dark. It just wasn’t something he’d thought a woman could do: construct a carefully considered, calculated plan to get what they wanted, rather than just act on immediate emotional impulse or niceness.
