Let me tell you about Hollie Haines. I met her when I about ten, and I remember being in quiet awe of her wild blonde curls that spiralled out into the autumn wind. The sort of princess hair that only exists in fairy-tales. And a personality to match: Hollie is, and was, the kind of girl who lights up the gloom with a brilliant smile, a laugh that sounds like music, and the kindest heart that exists on earth. I’m not saying that blithely: she is truly a wonderful, wonderful, person. In eighteen years, I’ve never known Hollie to be cruel, to be unkind, to be bitter, or be selfish. There are some people who just seem to be made of sheer moonlight and stardust, and Hollie is one of them.
Hollie is also, for the record, not an international conglomerate pumping oil into our oceans, clouds of smoke into our skies, and plastic into our seas. She does not employ tired children to stab their little fingers with needles in sweatshops for hours on end, she does not scream at her army of assistants and throw hot coffee over her PA, she does not underpay a team of delivery drivers she can’t be bothered…
