I asked my dad the exact same question as soon as we were in the car. He was surprised and said no, men just didn't really like looking weak in front of each other. I saw my dad's friend alone a week later (bumped into him on a walk) and he really poured his heart out to me about it, with very little prompting. Clearly just needed to talk. Very sad.
