In the movies, the orchestra swells as the poor, heartbroken outcast cries silently over the sepia photograph of the only woman he could ever love. He stands outside the church, stricken with grief, as she walks in a white gown in the arms of her handsome new husband. He never gets over her, never stops watching her, never moves away, and never stops tending to her grave. Romantic, right? Well, no.

Because no one actually likes experiencing unrequited, non-consensual attention.

Don’t worry beloved men: yes, women are just as guilty of this too. I’ll cover that, pinky promise. You matter too.

If I say no, and I have, often and repeatedly in my long life, I won’t change my mind. I have never changed my mind. Unless I’m absolutely certain that we are through, I won’t out and out reject you. Why? Because you don’t come back from that. It will always linger…
