No, men aren’t ‘programmed’ to be violent, disloyal, paedophilic rapists

Culture informs so much of what you accept as normal

A question I get a lot is “isn’t that just how men are programmed to behave” when I raise how horrified I am by slut-shaming, paedophilia, sexual harassment and assault. Surely, these people argue, these poor men can’t help it. Surely they have evolved, through time, to be sexually violent, morally incontinent, and biologically determined to rape, torture and molest girls and women who inspire their sexual urges? How else could we possibly explain why men behave the way they do, and (most) women don’t? I’d argue that this misandrist position fails to understand how culture actually works, and just how offensively reductionist the ‘biology’ argument really is to modern men.

Let’s start this story somewhere you’re not expecting: a genre of film that became very popular in the 1960s and 70s. Sex comedies. Grab your popcorn, sit down, and let us explore this hilarious, light-hearted, harmless and silly romp through cheap Pinewood Studios.

What was hilarious in 1960 is now a deeply disturbing watch

Here’s a good one; A bunch of fourteen-year-old schoolgirls try to distract their headmistress so they can smuggle a horny forty year old man into their room. No? Ok, how about one about two middle-aged men who discover they are camping next to a school…
