A few years ago, I’d have sobbed and begged and wept at someone’s feet to please, please not break up with me. I don’t think I’d have ever imagined behaving otherwise when their absence would hurt me so much. Today: yeah, I’m not doing any of that. The minute I know someone doesn’t want me, it’s a polite “I understand, take care” and I’m out, for good. Not because it doesn’t hurt, not because I won’t feel numb with sadness, eat a whole loaf of bread, and sob in the shower for an hour, but because I know that you can’t rewind that statement.

You should never choose someone who doesn’t choose you.

And never chase someone who is already running.

It’s horrendous when you realise someone isn’t calling you, saying they love you back any more, is annoyed by your attempts to be with them or show your affection, or looking for a way out. But my god: just go. Just leave. Just get out of there. You can’t make someone love you. You can’t make them want you. You can’t make them choose you.
