Really good question. I’ve worked a lot in the USA and had a front row seat to the nuances between our cultures; there are more than you’d think! In the UK, being overly upbeat, complimentary, friendly, or peppy is seen as being fake or irritating (unfair, I know, I dislike the cynicism) so that was part of it, for sure. Also we have a deep culture of never complain, never ask, never get angry towards staff or employees, no matter how bad the service is. “I want to see the manager” is shocking stuff here. You’re supposed to be demure, quiet, patient, and modest at all times in positions of power. So her getting frustrated and shouting and firing members of her team went down *really* badly here. Also if you’re an “outsider” to a class, you’re supposed to do your absolute best to fit in and follow the rules, so her attempt to be different and do thinks differently didn’t go down well at all! Then there’s a good spoonful of racism and americaphobia. She was treated appallingly, I agree. I feel sorry for her.
