Once upon a time at home

I sat beside the telephone.

Waiting for someone to pull me through

When at last it didn’t ring, I knew it wasn’t you.

Billy Bragg/ Kirsty MacColl, 1983

Can I ask you a question tonight? On Valentine’s Day? Yes, you. You the girl with your feet knotted together on the sofa, clasping a pillow because as sure as hell, he isn’t going to hold you back. You, the girl turning her phone on and off again, just in case he’s texted you something kind. You, the girl hoping he’s left you on read tonight because he’s in the middle of a huge personal crisis.

Do you deserve more than this?

I’m guessing yes. I’m guessing you would text him back. I’m guessing you’d hold him all night long. I’m guessing you’d call him if he asked you to. I’m guessing you’d get up right now and drive over if he needed you. I’m guessing you’d talk him up, ask him about his day, and tell him you missed him. I’m guessing you…
