Team Austen, or Team Brontë?

It seems people view this question like the cat or dog divide

I’m a die-hard Wuthering Heights kind of girl, just for disclosure purposes. But what does your favourite classic say about you? I’ve looked at three hit classics: Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Don’t worry if you haven’t read them all, I’ve gone through the plots. The decision is yours.

What’s your fave?

Let us begin! With…

Wuthering Heights

Author: Emily Brontë

Period: Gothic Victorian (1847)

Comic Book Taster:

What does this book say about you? This is one of the most dramatic, intense and dark novels written before the 20th Century. This book has one of the first complex, flawed, imperfect female characters. She gets angry. Violent. She doesn’t go to heaven. She’s driven by selfish desires. The love triangle is abusive, toxic, even obsessive: Heathcliff digs up her body just to be closer to her This is a book by a woman who isn’t worried about what society might think of her. Even today, it is shocking. I also love how Heathcliff is allowed to cry, be heartbroken, and emotionally devastated while still being ‘manly’. My guess is that you are a highly emotional person, fascinated by the darkness in love, and perhaps a tiny bit radical.

And now for…

Pride and Prejudice

Author: Jane Austen

Period: Regency

Comic Book Taster:

What does the book say about you? Well, while a bit tamer than the other books on this list, it’s still inventive, satirical, pretty funny and most of the characters are well developed. This means you are probably a bit of a romantic, a bit less crazy than the people who like Wuthering Heights, and enjoy a bit of a joke now and then. And you aren’t one to avoid making a joke about society. You almost definitely own a tea cup set.

Jane Eyre

Author: Charlotte Bronte

Period: Victorian Gothic (1840s)

Comic Book Taster:

What does this book say about you? Well,it’s dark, but it has a happy ending (sort of). Sort of somewhere between the two. Charlotte definitely isn’t as into full blown darkness as her sister Emily. You probably like suspense films, analysis, unsolved mysteries…and kittens. You probably watch documentaries on serial killers but still enjoy a good Catherine Cookson TV adaption. Probably a nice, well rounded, weird person. Well done you.
