Breaking up is horrible. But remember, the person being broken up with is going to have a worse time than you are. With that in mind, here is my advice on how to handle it well, no matter what the situation.
If you only dated once or twice
I personally don’t think you owe anyone an ‘explanation’ after only knowing them for a few days. That being said, stating immediately and honestly when you know you don’t want to see them again is always the best policy. Always do it on the same day you decide not to, so that person doesn’t have their time wasted. There is no need to humiliate them or make a scene: be polite, be respectful, and tell them you’re thankful for their time, but you’re not sensing a connection. Absolutely never insult their looks, weight, lifestyle, or personality. You’re not going to see this person again; they don’t need your input or appraisal. Words etch themselves onto people’s souls and cause real harm.
If you dated for over a few weeks to a month or two
