Three Rules For A Good, Happy Life
Why does any religion have rules? In a post-Marxist world, we often associate secularism with reason and religion with blind restrictive obedience. Which is – often wrong. Some rules outlive their usefulness. Others become obsolete. But, I think, it’s time we decided as a secular society on our own current moral absolutes, for the purpose of a kinder, fairer society. These are my own, personal moral laws.
1. Do no harm.
Do nothing to someone else that you would not like happening to you. That means don’t have a romantic relationship with someone’s partner, don’t lie to people who rely on you, don’t gossip about someone for behaving in an unusual way, don’t be unkind to someone who is lonely, and don’t be aggressive when someone makes a mistake. I know: this is hard. Start with small steps. When a friend is being cruel about another person, say “I’m trying to avoid gossiping, maybe we can discuss how we can help (name) through this?”. It’s hard at first and you might encounter some uncomfortable conversations, but a lighter conscience makes a better night’s sleep.
