Why do I write so much about dating and relationships?
Short answer: algorithm and audience
I’m a massive history, theatre, fashion and art nerd. I love comedy, I love cinema, I love travelling, and I love politics. I listen to Satie or Radio 4 while I’m painting, and I write satire, illustrate children’s books, and short horror and thriller stories. My life really isn’t boys, men, and dating. I’m actually a pretty reclusive, independent, and quiet person, outside of a few extroverted dinner parties and salons. So aren’t I playing into a trope when I write so much about dating? Aren’t I limiting myself? Aren’t I being a little bit sexist when I write so much about love? Shouldn’t I write more about my politics, ideology, religious ideals and cultural analysis?
Well, there’s a few reasons I don’t, usually.
One; the public expression of politics is a dicey thing that makes you immediate enemies. There will always be someone who unfollows you for voting for Keir Starmer, criticising the royal family, being pro-choice, or disliking Trump, or saying the Ayatollah is evil. I tried it recently (I supported a two state solution, the return of the hostages, an end to the war) and somehow managed to be an Islamist Traitor and a Heartless Zionist to two people over the same article. Which if nothing else is very impressive. I had a good laugh…
