Women aren’t evil: you’re just hurting

One of my male friends had his heart broken recently. He’s a good guy, gentle and a gentleman, but suddenly there was a seething, raw wound sitting opposite me angrily stabbing at his steak. “You’ve got to admit,” he said, pupils swollen, “Tate doesn’t have it all wrong about you women.”

I wasn’t too sure what to say. You women? Me? His friend? His friend who went on hikes with him and discussed religion and our favourite plays? Who tried to support him through this fuckfest of a divorce? Not me, surely? Eventually, I found my mouth moving. “You can’t think I’d go after a man for his money.”

He stares at me, clearly thinking. “Well, you’ll want a man who would support you. It’s evolution.”

I support me though, Nath.”

He waves his fork in the air. “Yeah, but when you have kids, you’d want a rich guy who would be able to pay for them. It’s expensive. I’m not judging you.”

“I wouldn’t have kids if I couldn’t support them. Or start a family with someone who didn’t want to do his bit. I…
